AUSTRALIAN SHORT STORIES
This collection was published in 1990 by Houghton Mifflin for the American market. It is a collection of twenty-six stories from writers whose birth-dates range from 1833 to 1954, the writers including Christina Stead, David Malouf, Thea Astley, Peter Carey, and Elizabeth Jolley. This was the first collection to contain all three stories of ‘The Drover’s Wife’ – one by Henry Lawson, one by Frank Moorhouse, and one by Murray Bail. The image on the cover of the book is ‘The Drover’s Wife’ by Russell Drysdale. These four entries into the narrative of the woman alone in the Australian outback at the beginning of the twentieth century speak eloquently to each other, and to the other stories in the collection, casting a strongly antipodean light on the events which are internal, external, personal, and universal. Return to 'Federation and Bunyip Bluegum'.
